Red’s editor picks her favorite fashion and home decor buys for February

Everything the Red Publisher is Buying This Monthred tents

If there’s anyone we turn to for shopping recommendations, it’s Red editor Sarah Tomczak. She’s always on hand for outfit inspiration and advice on independent brands worth adding to our wardrobes, as well as homeware shopping to elevate your interiors in a matter of minutes.

For our Red Shops newsletter, Sarah is curating a monthly issue of the items she currently wants. Smart, mood-lifting fashion purchases that you can treat yourself to now or add to your wish list for later (although you have excellent taste, so we can’t guarantee these pieces won’t sell out!) and beauty options! to add to your routine for the new season.

Among the selections this month is a versatile bucket bag we covet for the spring/summer months, a chic plaid coat that’s perfect for the transitional season, the perfect white t-shirt for year-round wear.

See Sarah’s picks below.

The inversion loafers

“Yes, they are an investment, but I recently bought some white Gucci loafers and have worn them over and over again. They’re timeless and iconic so I’ll be relying on them for decades to come (great cost-per-wear power), white adds freshness to a simple outfit, and Gucci’s unmistakable horsebit makes everything else look more expensive. Also, if you are going to spend on shoes, do it in flats so that you really wear them ad nauseam ”.

the elevated basic

“I discovered Alex Mill on a recent trip to New York, but now you can buy their elevated staples in the UK too. This striped shirt tops my spring wish list – the little details set it apart from the crowd: the rounded hem, mandarin collar, pearl buttons and striped pocket. Great with jeans, but I would also wear it over a bathing suit on vacation.”

the fancy coat

“Plaid coats aren’t going anywhere, so if you haven’t bought one yet, now might be the time. Boden’s is extra long and the combination of red and navy gives it a subtle pop of colour. You could wear this to work, but I’d love it on the weekend with a gray hoodie and cap.”

The fashion logo cap

“Speaking of caps, a logo cap is an instant way to add some flair to your outfit. I haven’t succumbed yet, but plan this spring…”

The perfect white t-shirt

“I’m always looking for the perfect jersey and I think Anthropologie could have nailed it with this slightly cropped number with its deep sleeves. Great with high waisted pants or skirts.”

The versatile bag

“I always stock up on bedding on sale and this Anthropologie set is especially beautiful, and neutral enough to work in any room.”

The cool fabric

“I’m so happy Arket cut this little black striped bouclé jacket down as it adds an extra element of French style to the blue and white stripes. With the zipper up, it can be worn with black skinny pants in a more elegant way, but it’s also perfect without the zipper open with jeans and Converse. Non-negotiable: red lips.”

timeless sunglasses

“A great pair of flats will enhance a suit or jeans and a sweater. These loafers have serious Gucci vibes.”

The Cowgirl Alternative

“Instead of buying another pair of jeans, opt for a jean skirt for a new-season update. This is a great transitional mid blue shade and will look just as good with long boots and a turtleneck now as it will with sliders and a t-shirt in the summer.”

The luxury blouse

“This is a great time to shop for a luxe blouse to add some instant new-season magic to your existing wardrobe. This one from Doen (one of my all-time favorite brands) has beautiful puff sleeves and a little peplum, so it’s great with high-waisted pants or skirts, and the pop of color and vintage floral print are so on-trend . Put it on under a trench coat now and wear it alone while it warms up.”

the flattering dress

“Such a beautiful cut and striking shade of red, this is such a flattering and functional dress. It feels minimal and modern and since it doesn’t have a pattern, it won’t go out of style. Wear it with a skinny turtleneck underneath for extra warmth, and consider swapping out the belt for a tan, navy, or even pink.

The classic point

“A super soft, classic knit to wear on its own or over a shirt or dress. I’m sold.”

The sandals sold

“In my experience, really good sandals sell fast, and these are really good sandals. So, I would buy them now and then smugly put them away for a few months…”
